Around the end of our semester we had 4 weeks to develop our own XR project in groups of 2. We chose to make a VR horror game around the mechanic of using echolocation as your only way to get information about your surroundings.

Design challenge:
Design a VR horror game to enable gamers looking for a scare to escape a facility with the use of echolocation while hiding from monsters in order to make them feel scared and think strategically about their movement

Project ranged from June 2025 -> July 2025 (4 weeks)
Prototype of a game where you can only see your surroundings by making sound (echolocation). While trying to make your way through the level you will come across an enemy that is attracted to sound. Make sure not to get caught!
The world is completely dark. Your only way to see is by making sound. This can be done by throwing objects, or by pressing a button on your controller.
Different objects make different sounds and have a different effect on sounds, changing the sound-wave that gets emitted.
Throughout the prototype you will find an enemy which is attracted to sound. Your goal is to get to the exit of the room without getting caught by the enemy.
Since you need to see in order to move around the room, you're forced to strategically use your sounds.
-
We also planned to have different objects like a timer which emits sound after a while, or a glass bottle which could only be used once, and puzzles that also reacted to sound.
These couldn't get implemented in time.
We designed the general idea behind the game together, after which we focussed on individual design tasks.
My contributions:
General game design
Echolocation design
Sound enemy design
Since we only had a few weeks to develop this game, I worked a lot on trying to create rapid prototypes of our features to get a testable build ready.
